Who Knew? Tips for Keeping Your Car Like New!
Posted on by Simoniz Garage
So you’re the proud owner of a shiny new car - but how long until that car isn’t looking so brand new anymore? Here at Simoniz, we know a thing or two about keeping your car looking and running like the day you brought it home, so here are a few of our favorite tips for maintaining that showroom sparkle.
- Keep it clean! This may seem like a no brainer, but most people don’t wash their cars as often as they should. That dirt and road grime can build up and act like sandpaper, wearing down and weakening your paint – and paint color is more than just a way to express yourself when it comes to your car. Your paint protects the body of the car, and when it starts to crack or chip off, it exposes the car’s body to the elements and the metal will begin to rust and corrode. If this rust goes untreated, it will eventually weaken the body of the car and eat away holes, leaving vital parts exposed. Now, there is some debate about how often you should wash your car to prevent this from happening, but there are several factors to consider. How often and where you drive/park your car are two of the most important. For example, if you spend a lot of time each day driving and/or park your car under a tree where bugs, birds and branches are constant issues – you should be washing your car weekly. But, if your car doesn’t have much contact with these paint busters because you park in a garage and don’t drive your car all that much, biweekly washes are fine.
- Wax On, Wax Off. Mr. Miyagi isn’t the only one who knows how important a good wax can be for the life of your car – we recommend waxing your car once every three months. Waxing protects your paint from the elements and acts like a shield against irritants that can damage your car, waxing also makes it easier to clean your car when it gets dirty by acting as a barrier between the paint and the road grime that accumulates over time. Most of our waxes at Simoniz contain a special blend of synthetic polymers for ease of use and pure carnauba for excellent durability to keep your paint protected for up to 90 days.
- Don’t forget about the inside! It’s nice to have a sparkling clean paint job, but neglecting the interior of your car is never a good idea. Your leather seats should be conditioned once every three months, but if you frequently have passengers or your car spends a lot of time in the sun, it might be best to treat them every two months to protect them from damage. Your carpets also should be cleaned every two months or so. Leaving dirt or gravel behind breaks down your carpets more quickly and can lead to holes or premature wearing down of the fibers.
- Clay All Day. If you have no idea what it means to “clay your car”, don’t worry you’re not alone. Until fairly recently clay bars could only be found in detailing shops and weren’t available to the public. These clay bars deep clean and removes surface contaminants like tree mist, bug residue, paint overspray, road tar, rail dust and other stubborn dirt that normal washing won't get rid of. They can even remove particles that have become trapped under your car’s paint – leaving your car looking and feeling as smooth as glass.
So, now that you know our detailer’s secrets, you’re equipped with the knowledge to extend the life of your car and keep it looking brand new. Remember, if you take care of your car, it will take care of you – so keep your car looking it’s best while protecting your investment.
